A tenugui is made by cutting kohaba, a uniquely narrow-width Japanese fabric, to the desired size. Its edges are left unsewn. Its elongated shape means that designs unfold across its surface in a distinctive way. The composition of each design plays an essential role in shaping its character. Decisions such as what to emphasize, where to crop a motif and how to use negative space have a significant impact on the overall impression of each piece. This exhibition showcases the creative use of composition in tenugui, highlighting the distinctive expressive appeal of this traditional cloth.
