Gagaku, often described as the world’s oldest orchestral tradition, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage that brings together ancient Japanese music and dance with musical traditions introduced from across Asia. A group of musicians continues to preserve and pass on this tradition through independent activities.

This exhibition features photographs taken since the COVID-19 pandemic by an artist who became fascinated by gagaku through a chance encounter. Selected from a series that has been ongoing since 2008, the photographs capture the people and performances keeping this ancient musical tradition alive today.
