Kula Photo Gallery presents Malinke, Malinke (Tokyo), a solo exhibition by painter Takumi Sato, following its presentation in Sapporo in March 2026. This marks Sato’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo.
Through painting, installation, research and writing, Sato explores the history and culture of Hokkaido and the people connected to the region. The title work, Malinke, Malinke, draws on family photographs of Sato’s grandfather, who spent part of childhood in Sakhalin. The title comes from a name given to the grandfather by Russians. The exhibition also features a series of map-inspired works that question the act of drawing itself.
Moving between personal and collective memory, documentation and storytelling, Sato’s work explores history and belonging, questions that remain urgent in a world where international conflicts continue to intensify.
