In Tetsuya Nagato's previous two solo exhibitions at 104Galerie, he presented concept and project-based works. This exhibition, marking his third solo show approximately four years since the last, will showcase works centered around Nagato's pure collages, which can be considered his mainstay. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to view digital collage works created last year and the three-dimensional works derived from them, presenting a new direction for his art.
Tetsuya Nagato has long been exploring collage artworks using a vast array of printed materials he has collected over time. These printed materials, detached from their original contexts, have their information such as color and texture incorporated into Nagato's consciousness as sensory symbols. Through numerous actions such as the disassembly, processing, and reshaping of paper, essentially oscillating between the real and unreal worlds, they are transformed into collage artworks with new meanings and images. Through Nagato's works, we can perceive the consciousness of "transforming existing things" and the perspective of "viewing from another world" while going about our daily lives.
The title of this exhibition, "Lodestone," carries significant meaning, representing the subtle flow of energy and magnetism that Nagato constantly senses during his artistic process. The main pieces feature six symbols of magnetism born from the world of thought liberated from the concepts of life and death as envisioned by Nagato.
Nagato describes feeling a certain force that attracts materials and guides the creation process as if the paper fragments were drawn together by magnetism. This exhibition represents Nagato Tetsuya's multifaceted approach to collage art.
An opening reception will be held surrounding the artist on Friday, March 8th, from 7:00 PM.
