Taikan Yokoyama
In 2024, the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art will celebrate its 50th anniversary since its opening. To celebrate, the museum is holding an exhibition of the works of Taikan Yokoyama from the Adachi Museum of Art.

Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958) is a leading Japanese painter. Yokoyama deeply sympathized with the ideals of Tenshin Okakura, who pointed out the path to protect Japan's cultural assets, encourage new expressions based on the tradition of Japanese art, and connect them to the future. Yokoyama participated in the establishment of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japanese Art Institute) founded by Okakura. He studied Western painting techniques and challenged innovative expressions known as "mourotai" (literally, "dim and vague style"). After Okakura's death, Yokoyama and others took over his will and revived the art institute. Thereafter, they actively contributed to the development of Japanese art and culture, not only in the Japanese painting world but also in Japanese art and culture as a whole. In 1937, he was awarded the first Cultural Medal for his great achievements. In this exhibition, we will display 50 masterpieces of Taikan Yokoyama, a master of modern Japanese painting, from the renowned Adachi Museum of Art collection, which is famous for its collection of modern and contemporary Japanese paintings.
