Since the prefectural Kanazawa Bunko opened in 1930, one of its main activities has been the investigation and research of the "Kanazawa Bunko Documents." The "Kanazawa Bunko Documents" contain letters from high-ranking Kamakura samurai, including the Kanazawa Hojo clan, high-ranking Kyoto monks, and renowned scholars of Shomyoji Temple. They have attracted significant attention both domestically and internationally as an important collection of historical materials for understanding the politics, social economy, religion, and culture of the Kamakura period. Since then, over the course of its nearly 100 years of operation, the "Kanazawa Bunko Documents" have been investigated, studied, repaired, and made public. They were designated an Important Cultural Property in 1990 and a National Treasure in 2016. In this respect, the activities of the prefectural Kanazawa Bunko and the history of the "Kanazawa Bunko Documents" can be said to be on the same track. This exhibition will look back on the activities of the Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko as a museum (library) through the investigation, research, repair, compilation and public display of the Kanazawa Bunko Documents, and will also look ahead to the future direction of investigation, research, public display and preservation of the Kanazawa Bunko Documents.
