The Sarau is an itinerant collective exhibition that will hold its next event at MUGEN Gallery in Tokyo. Inspired by sarau — a cultural event of Portuguese and Brazilian origin derived from the Latin word for “evening gathering” — it represents a space where people come together to express themselves through various forms of art. In Brazil, saraus became symbols of romanticism and intellectual exchange, serving as spaces for dialogue and the sharing of ideas.
The Sarau, as a collective and curatorial platform, seeks to bring forth a movement of artistic communion. Through inclusive curatorship, it offers both artists and audiences the opportunity to expand their creative experiences within a shared space of connection and experimentation. Working closely with emerging and early-career artists, the collective aims to foster bridges between cultures, practices, and sensibilities — cultivating new possibilities of artistic encounter.
The Borders Edition In this edition, The Sarau presents a series of collective exhibitions including illustrations, paintings, and installations. Alongside these, the event marks the launch of its first physical collective project — a book exploring queer narratives through the experiences of selected writers and artists, each visually represented by a different creator. The program also includes the curation of a collaborative performance presented during the exhibition.
In this edition, The Sarau unfolds as a dialogue between the borders of the body, reality, and dreams — each work is a fragment of a shared sensibility that questions how we inhabit the world and one another.
