The Work of Shiro Kuramata: A Microcosmos of Memory

Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design
Finished

Artists

Shiro Kuramata
Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991) continues to receive high acclaim and exert influence in the field of design, even more than 30 years after his passing, extending beyond the realm of design. Using materials such as acrylic, glass, and architectural metals, he primarily focused on furniture and interiors. His work, at times, influenced by contemporary art, poses questions to design and societal conditions, captivating people to this day.

This exhibition, carrying Shiro Kuramata's name, is the first in approximately 10 years. It traces his career from the work he did in his 20s before becoming an independent designer, to the furniture and interiors he designed until his sudden departure at the age of 56. The exhibition follows a chronological order, incorporating 7 chairs, including "Miss Blanche" (1988), from the museum's collection. Additionally, it attempts to convey "Shiro Kuramata the person," exploring his inner thoughts, backgrounds, and late-night diary entries, image sketches, alongside his library, records, and his own words from his later years.
