Where is the boundary between craft and art? By today's standards, tea parties were artistic gatherings some 400 years ago. The tea gathering was an innovative format that embodied the spirit of Japanese aesthetics. It brought together different tools and settings to create a work of total art, drawing people who transformed their time and creating a place for dialogue. As seen by tea utensils, Japanese art has historically been useful, in contrast to the Western concept of art which tends to omit functionality. Following this, the English term "craft" is frequently used to translate the category of craft, and expressive craft is still not entirely accepted as "art."
B-ownd presents this show to look into the paradoxical idea that functionality might become a new form of art, emphasizing the structure of the tea gathering as total art, while maintaining the link and historical heritage between craft and art.
