Women Artists Crossing the Sea

Yokohama Museum of Art
Until Feb 11
The Yokohama Museum of Art holds a collection of approximately 15,000 works dating from the late 19th century—when Yokohama Port was opened—to the present day. In our collection exhibitions we showcase the delights of our collection from a range of different perspectives.

This exhibition features a special section titled “Women Artists Crossing the Sea,” focusing on women from the 20th century onwards whose work has transcended national borders. The exhibition begins by looking back at the relationships between three female painters—who became the first generation of female artists to engage with foreign cultures—and their families. Next, we present works by artists who traveled from Europe and the United States to Asia, including Japan. Their creative works convey a sense of fresh wonder and unique perspectives on different environments and cultures.

Furthermore, in Japan, after World War II and the onset of the period of rapid economic growth, citizens were allowed to travel abroad more freely from 1964. It was after 1950s that many artists began studying in foreign countries, while others travelled all over the world, drawing inspiration for their work from these experiences. From the latter half of the 20th century onward, female artists also saw remarkable success at international exhibitions, in particular the Venice Biennale.

This exhibition traces the creative journeys of women who displayed both grace and resilience on the global stage. We invite you to witness the energy and vitality embodied in their works, born amidst the wave of globalization.
