Book and Sons presents Nakaima | Berlin, a photography exhibition by Yasutaka Kojima, opening September 17.
Kojima captures a Berlin that feels removed from familiar histories and memories, as if it exists outside time and space. Inspired by quantum theory and Nakaima, an ancient Shinto concept referring to the present moment at the center of time and space, the series explores a “three-dimensional present” where past, present and future coexist.
Following earlier work in Tokyo and New York, Kojima uses a flat, minimalist composition shot from eye level. By removing specific locations and historical references, the photographs leave space for viewers to find their own meanings. Beneath each image lies a quiet sense of time and distance, suggesting a deeper, cyclical flow of time.
