Nerima Art Museum presents “Yuasa Eboshi and the Avant-Garde in Postwar Japan: Fables of Metamorphosis,” bringing together contemporary artist Eboshi Yuasa and artists who pursued avant-garde practices in postwar Japan through the theme of “metamorphosis.”
Yuasa combines images gathered from old magazines, newspapers and the internet to create paintings while also developing the fictional life story of a third-rate painter supposedly born in 1924. By transforming into this fictional artist through painting, Yuasa moves between the postwar period and the present, exploring how images can reshape our understanding of the past.
After World War II, avant-garde artists used images of distorted human figures, hybrid creatures and uncanny masks to explore memories of war, contradictions in postwar society and changing ideas of the human figure. The exhibition traces the motif of metamorphosis in postwar Japanese art through works by several artists, alongside Yuasa’s practice.
Yuasa will also present new works, accompanied by new additions to the fictional painter’s timeline and stories surrounding the works.
