National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
Yumeji Tsukioka (1921-2017) was an actress who entered the film world from the Takarazuka Revue. Possessing beauty and superb acting skills, she established herself as a top star and enjoyed a long career appearing in numerous works in both leading and supporting roles. Umetsugu Inoue (1923-2010) was a director who started at Shintoho and eventually led productions at all six major film companies and eleven studios. He was an enriching presence in the industry, producing a succession of highly entertaining works that were hits with audiences. His skills behind the camera later led to an invitation to work in Hong Kong. Tsukioka and Inoue met during the film’s golden age and were married in 1957, becoming one of the most celebrated couples in Japanese cinema.

This exhibition, “Yumeji Tsukioka and Umetsugu Inoue at their Centenary,” commemorates the 100th anniversary of their births. Held with the special cooperation of the Inoue & Tsukioka Movie Foundation, it will present a comprehensive collection of their works and personal items, thereby tracing the couple’s careers that captured the hearts of so many and helped advance Japan’s movie industry. We invite you to follow the paths of these two shining stars who lived their lives in film entertainment across a broad range of genres.
