Yumeji Takehisa
Yumeji Art Museum was founded in 1966 to bring works by Okayama-born poet and painter Takehisa Yumeji (1884–1934) back to the artist’s hometown. This year marks its 60th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion the museum presents a special exhibition featuring the first public display of Nanshi Soshun a portrait painted during Yumeji’s stay in Berlin in 1933 and recently donated to the museum.
Across two venues the exhibition traces Yumeji’s lifelong fascination with foreign cultures from childhood and travels through the United States and Europe to the later years in Berlin. The exhibition explores how encounters with different cultures shaped approaches to Japanese painting and examines artistic developments during the Berlin period.
The main venue focuses on Yumeji’s time teaching Japanese painting at an independent art school in Berlin. Alongside Nanshi Soshun the exhibition features paintings sketches teaching materials and student works including several works shown for the first time. Together these works offer a glimpse into Yumeji’s late artistic experiments and experiences in a Berlin undergoing major social and political change.
