On 29th July 2023, “Richter Raum” opened in a forested area of Karuizawa. Over the past 30 years, Wako Works of Art has been working with the German artist, Gerhard Richter. We are pleased to open a new space in Karuizawa, where works by Richter are permanently installed. With the cooperation of the artist, the space has been partly modelled after Atelier Richter. Barely an hour from Tokyo, in woods reminiscent of the leafy suburbs outside Cologne, it shall offer visitors an opportunity to experience the work and world of Gerhard Richter.

* As it is a small venue, reservation in advance will be required. Please reserve from here.

The Shiga Kogen Roman Museum, operated by the town of Yamanouchi, was established in the fall of 1997 to commemorate the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa, one of Japan’s most renowned architects, the building reflects his philosophy of “symbiosis with nature.” It harmonizes with the surrounding environment while maintaining a unique and striking presence.
The museum building is two stories tall and centers around a 15-meter-high atrium, encircled by the second-floor exhibition galleries, forming an overall elliptical shape. The exterior walls are made of concrete embedded with titanium chips, and natural light pours in through the glass windows at the entrance. This light creates ever-changing shadows and patterns on the walls, expressing the passage of time and the changing seasons.
An adjacent conical restaurant building serves as a landmark easily recognizable from afar. The same cone motif is echoed in the museum’s central hall, where twelve conical display cases are arranged in a circle. Kurokawa designed these cones to represent the forest of Shiga Kogen.

Located near the banks of the Kamigawa River that carries fresh water from Tateshina and Yatsugatake to Lake Suwa, the Chino City Museum of Art was opened on July 5, 1980. In October 2005, it was relocated to the Chino Cultural Complex near the east exit of JR Chino Station.

As a result of local artists and those who sought refuge during wartime, Suwa has a rich history of pioneering art education and dissemination. There were many artists who were born on or visited the Tateshina Plateau and stayed there.

The Chino City Museum of Art exhibits works by artists with ties to the region. The museum's collection includes over 1000 pieces of artwork spanning various genres, such as paintings, sculptures, crafts, calligraphy, prints, and photographs.

In addition to permanent and special exhibitions, the museum actively engages with the community by offering participatory workshops, educational programs, and collaborative projects with theaters and community organizations. With these initiatives, the museum aims to make art accessible to the public. Through it, people have the chance to encounter and appreciate art on a daily basis.
