Akitomo Tsuchiya
Gallery Beaux is pleased to anounce Akitomo Tsuchiya's first solo exhibition in Tokyo. Tsuchiya was awarded the Grand Prix Award at the 8th Ryohei Koiso Triennial Grand Prize Exhibition in 2007.
On view at this exhibition are about 20 paintings, including "The Altar," the piece submitted to the 6th Ryohei Koiso Biennial Grand Prize Exhibition, as well as recent oil and watercolor paintings. Deploying impeccable techniques and a unique sense for color, he represents miniatures of a new era.
At the age of 32, Tsuchiya was inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth and began to paint. Then he decided to go to the U.S. to explore the fine arts. After years of training in classic realism in Minnesota, he returned to Nagano, Japan, where he currently resides with his wife and two children, to keep pursuing his career as painter. His experiences in Minnesota have had a profound effect on his paintings. With a tremendous degree of accuracy, Tsuchiya paints with an almost obsessive level of attentiveness to detail. "Painting something is the same as feeling something. I try to convey what I felt about my subjects," says Tsuchiya. At times his paintings have strong social messages, as seen in "The Walls," which won the Grand Prix Award at the 8th Ryohei Koiso Triennial Grand Prize Exhibition. "We feel the presence of various kinds of 'walls' or 'barriers,' whether they are historical, social or individual. I want to attain the power needed to overcome such walls." Tsuchiya's message carries a positive meaning here. We can see a flicker of hope for the future, rather than the typically pessimistic shadows that lurk in his work, regardless of the medium he chooses.
