Pop-Up and Movable Books: A History of Techniques

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished

Artists

Lothar Meggendorfer, Ernest Nister, Robert Sabuda, David A. Carter et al.
Introduces the history and techniques of pop-up books, an increasingly popular subject among Musashino students in recent years. It explores the fascination of “in-motion picture books” as a kind of three-dimensional structural object, focusing on rare pop-up books from the MAU Museum & Library collection dating back to these works’ early era in the 19th century. A total of 80 books will be presented in two sessions. Part one concentrates on the techniques of masters such as Meggendorfer and Niester, explaining some of the illusions and dynamic uses of perspective they developed. Part two showcases works by 20th century pop up book pioneers, including designers and “paper engineers” such as Robert Sabuda.
