“The National Treasure Butto (Buddha Head) of Yakushi Nyorai and Masterpieces from Kohfukuji”

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
Displays works of art from the Eastern Golden Hall (Tōkondō) of Kohfukuji in Nara, including the temple’s representative Hakuhō period national treasure, “Bronze Butto (Buddha Head) of Yakushi Nyorai.” Twenty-four works are shown together for the first time: the national treasures “Twelve Heavenly General Standing Wooden Sculptures” (Kamakura period), which serve as protective deities of the Butto, and the relief carving masterpieces, “Twelve Heavenly General Wooden Tablet Relief Carvings” (Heian period). Treasures from the Hossō school of Buddhism will also be on display, as well as the Hakuhō period’s important cultural property “Bronze Seated Shaka Nyorai” from the collection of Jindaiji in Chōfu, Tokyo. In total, the exhibition brings together over 70 exemplary works, including 25 national treasures and 31 important cultural properties. Using virtual reality technology, it also attempts to reconstruct the Butto and introduces a project to rebuild the Central Golden Hall (Chūkondō).
