The Aesthetics of Photography - The Making of Photographic Works

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished
The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography sets a different theme each year and then carefully selects from its collection masterpieces that relate to the theme. This year it focuses on “the aesthetics of photography,” presenting in three phases various trends in photographic expression from the early 19th century to contemporary works that explore the aesthetics of photography. While the word “aesthetics” conjures up the idea of physical beauty, it in fact means “the study of beauty,” referring to a means of developing a mind that understands beauty. The exhibition examines photographic techniques from an aesthetic standpoint with photos that exemplify practices including shooting angle, use of light, deep focus/differential focus, and post-shooting work (darkroom development/image processing).
