“Tales of the Brothers Grimm as Translated by Ogai and Son”

Mori Ogai Memorial Museum
Finished
The Grimm’s Fairy Tales were published by the Grimm brothers in Germany in 1812, bringing together a collection of much loved tales which had continued to reach beyond borders and generations. Ogai Mori also read these tales together with his children and his eldest daughter Mari looked back with fondness upon the stories of Snow White, Cinderella and other German fairy tales. His oldest son Oto, under Ogai’s tutorship, translated 15 tales from German to Japanese between the ages of 12-16 years and these were published in various magazines. This exhibition excavates the legacy of Ogai’s mentorship, surveying a wide collection of translations by Oto which reveal the direct corrections made by his father and highlighting the passion of father and son for these tales passed down through generations.
