“They are living things, they are delicate machines.” In the course of his own labors in cultivating rice, the poet Kenji Miyazawa succinctly captured the essence of rice with this phrase. In Japan, rice is a hub that links the real staples of life with culture. The intricate environmental systems that make the cultivation of rice possible and have given rise to a particular culture offer up many clues towards a science of design which we have much to learn from. This exhibition examines Japan’s cultural roots in rice and points to new forms of aesthetic “sustenance” that will go on to define new futures.
