Yozo Hamaguchi + Shotaro Akiyama “4 Months in Paris”

Musee Hamaguchi Yozo / Yamasa Collection
Finished

Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Shotaro Akiyama
Shotaro Akiyama was a leading photographer of distinct lyrical style, known particularly for his portrait series and devotion to the subject of flowers. At the age of 40 he determined to spend time in Europe and as of February 1960 he spent 4 months travelling from his base in Paris, capturing on film the landscapes and artists he encountered. Through these works one may witness his unique aesthetic sensibility, in which the drama of the moment rises to a crescendo, implying that the very light and wind moving through the image, existed merely for the purpose of that single scene.
That same year, printmaker Yozo Hamaguchi was amongst the representatives of Japan at the Venice Biennale. The very next day after Akiyama arrived in Paris, Hamaguchi went to visit him and subsequently joined him in his travels. Amongst the scenes captured by Hamaguchi during these journeys are the studio of Hamaguchi, discussions with printmaker Stanley William Hayter and scenes of Venice and the Venice Biennale.
With the support of the Shotaro Akiyama Photo Art Museum the photographs of this period combined with associated documents and materials are on display, many for the first time, alongside 3 key printworks of Hamaguchi from Akiyama’s personal collection, as well as 30 pieces featured at the Venice Biennale.
