Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) first picked up a camera towards the end of 1863. She claims an important place in the history of photography, for taking what was simply a medium for recording, and elevating it into an art form. Cameron was born in Calcutta, India to a British colonial family who enjoyed an active social life, and moved back to England in 1848. She took up photography at the age of 48 and was soon actively exhibiting her work. From her lively portraits to theatrical work after Old master paintings, she used innovative techniques including intentional soft focus and scratched and smudged negatives that showed traces of her process.
This exhibition celebrates the bicentennial of Cameron’s birth and has been organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum to tour six countries across the world. This is the first time a Julia Margaret Cameron retrospective will come to Japan. The exhibition includes extremely valuable and limited original prints (vintage prints) from the highest point of Cameron’s career. It is made up of about 150 pieces, from photographs to letters, and gives a fresh perspective to Cameron’s intention and unique techniques, opening up new horizons of artistic expression.
