Seiji Chokai and His Era

Hiratsuka Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Seiji Chokai et al.
Seiji Chokai (1902–1972) was an important Hiratsuka artist. Initially influenced by Fauvism and later developing an approach blending Eastern and Western styles while pursuing abstract realism with heavy materiality, he traveled across Japan and around the world, depicting the scenes, people, buildings, and ruins he encountered. Having recently added “Seto no Yama” (Seto Mountains) to its collection of some 160 works by Chokai, the museum now presents its first exhibition of his work in 48 years.
