Artists

Tojiro Oshita et al.
Watercolor painting, which was introduced into Japan as a Western painting technique, reached its golden age from the mid-Meiji era onwards. The watercolorist Oshita Tojiro (1870-1911) published an enlightening handbook of watercolors entitled Suisaiga no shiori and an art magazine entitled Mizue, which made him the central figure in the vogue for watercolors. He also produced the finest watercolor paintings. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Oshita’s birth, this exhibition looks back on his life and artistic career and presents numerous master examples of watercolor painting dating from the Meiji era.
