For the first time, more than 90 nameplates and plaster title plates for sculptures, which have remained closed to the public in the collection room for more than half a century, will be exhibited.
Kitamura Seibou wrote the title plates for his sculptures and the inscriptions placed outdoors himself and then carved them in relief. In his studio in Inokashira, Kitamura Saibou enjoyed writing calligraphy and haiku and left behind a large number of works. This interest in calligraphy can also be seen in the collection of books left in his studio, as well as in a collection of works by Chinese calligraphers of the Qing dynasty.
This exhibition is divided into four sections: 1) the initial positioning and overall design of the inscription, comparing it with blueprints and sketches; 2) the title plate of the outdoor sculptures installed in Inokashira Park; 3) the inscription for the portrait sculpture commissioned after “Peace Statue”; and 4) the inscription as a study.
