Julio Le Parc
Born in Argentina in 1928, Julio Le Parc is an artist who has been based there since moving to France in 1958. Influenced by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) and Russian Constructivism, Le Parc began to create geometric abstractions. In the midst of the revolutionary fervor of the time, Le Parc also threw himself into political activism, questioning the idea that art could only be enjoyed by a limited number of people and that viewers would remain in a passive position, and by using elements of visual play and games, he gave shape to his desire for everyone to participate equally in art.
In this exhibition, Le Parc’s first solo show in Japan, the artist will focus on the subject of “color,” which has always made a vivid impression on him in his more than 70 years of continuous work. Starting with black and white and their gradation, the artist has been developing works using only 14 colors that he conceived in 1959. These works do not analyze color as in color theory, but rather view color as a metaphor for geometric form or variability. They were created by setting up an array of colors for each series and exploring variations such as rotation, repetition, and division. For Le Parc, handling color freely while identifying the mechanisms of color gradation and transformation was an attempt to summarize the possibilities of color, and it became an important series to be continued in parallel with mobiles that incorporate light and movement.
In this exhibition, in order to get a closer look at the artist’s awareness of the issues, the exhibition will present Le Parc’s early black-and-white paintings and drawings exploring color, as well as his representative works such as La Longue Marche (Long Walk) and Lames réfléchissantes (Reflective Blades). The exhibition will also feature new mobiles that have been developed since the GRAV era. The exhibition will also cover the facade, window displays, and elevators of the Maison Hermes building, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary and will challenge Le Parc’s goal of an open encounter with the viewer.
