Aya Fujioka
Aya Fujioka is a photographer born and living in Hiroshima. She won the Ihei Kimura Photography Award and the Chujihiko Hayashi Award in 2018 for her photo collection “Kawahayu” (Akaakasha), which captures snapshots of present-day Hiroshima, loosely connected to its history as an A-bombed city more than 70 years after the war and the people who live there today.

In this exhibition, Aya Fujioka will present her photographs of flowers, which she has been taking since 1990 when she started photography.
In recent years, as discussions about sexism and gender have spread worldwide, a debate has emerged about the framework of “girl photography,” as the young female photographers who emerged in the 1990s were called.

Aya Fujioka is one of the artists featured in Shutter & Love (Infus, 1996) and referred to as “girl photography. Fujioka was bothered by the fact that she could not express herself well when she was asked to give her opinion on “girl photography. This experience led him to think that he needed to look back at the photos from that time in order to reveal what he was like back then, and he began to organize the old negatives. What emerged from the photos was a picture of herself as a “girl,” as she was once called, and how she had changed since then.

This exhibition presents a chronicle of Fujioka’s photographs of flowers taken unconsciously from 1990 when she started photography to 2020.
