Kyoto merchants have been clothing aristocrats, samurai households, and wealthy townspeople in gorgeous, luxurious clothing since the Heian era, overcoming many difficulties throughout the ages to produce new textile technologies. There was a time, however, when their industry experienced a slump. In 1931, Kyoto textile companies held a festival to revive the industry. This exhibition of restored Kyoto textile technologies traces 1500 years of history in Japanese women’s clothing from antiquity to the Meiji era and presents examples of fine Kyoto textiles from the late-Edo through early-Showa periods from the museum collection.
