French composer, Erik Satie (1866-1925), was a creative figure who played a leading role in the transition period between the 19th and 20th century, attracting the wide attention of many great artists with his brilliant esprit. First beginning his career as a composer in Montmartre, where many artists gathered to form an atmosphere of liberalism, he continued to maintain a deep communication with artists throughout his life. After the beginning of World War I, he was involved with theatrical productions and created “Parade” for Ballets Russes in collaboration with Pablo Picasso and “Relâche” for Ballets suédois with Francis Picabia, which were all marks of success. Meanwhile, Georges Braque, Constantin Brancusi, Man Ray and many Dadaists created works which drew inspiration from him. This exhibition focuses on the broad ranging work of Satie–who Man Ray described as “the only musician who had eyes”–with a particular focus upon his relationships with artists, and reveals new facets of the composer through the works of the artists who inspired him and who were inspired by him.
