Irises and Red and White Plum Blossoms: The Secret of Korin’s Design

In commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the death of Korin Ogata, who died in 1716 at the age of 59, the Nezu Museum is presenting a special exhibition in which, for the first time in 56 years, two screens by Ogata, “Irises” from the Nezu Museum collection and “Red and White Plum Blossoms” from the MOA Museum of Art, will be displayed together. These two works offer another look at Ogata’s design sensibility. Tracing the lineage of Ogata’s “design-like” folding screens back to artists such as Sotatsu Tawaraya, this exhibition explores the influence Ogata received from artists such as Koetsu Honami, who used mica materials and gold and silver paint in woodblock printing, as well as other designers including lacquer artists and ceramics painters.
