The Birth of Seeing: Tomoko Konoike

Takamatsu Art Museum

Artists

Tomoko Konoike
The visually-centered values that art has privileged to present and the structure of cultural and economic globalism are now at a turning point on a global scale. Tomoko Konoike has consistently questioned the fundamentals of art since its inception, using all kinds of familiar media from animation, painting, picture books, and sculpture to handicrafts, fairy tales, and songs, traveling and creating works along with the terrain and seasons.

For this exhibition, Konoike named the surprise of encountering the world with a newborn body “The Birth of Seeing.” The audience will be able to see not only with their eyes, but also with their hands, nose, ears, and even their breath, opening a new passage between the solid architecture of the museum and the estranged natural world. The new "Animal Dung" model and the "Leather Dragonfly," made of cowhide and leather, will coexist with the museum's collection, which are traces of humans. In the "Intertidal Zone," the topos of the lapping waves of life that connect the museum and the island of Oshima across the sea, works by the "Kinyokai" painting club of the National Sanatorium Kikuchi Keifuen, "Model of Narwhal in Green Forest," and "Storytelling Table Runner," a handicraft, will be displayed like waves. Every living thing is different, every time and light is different. The audience is no longer only human.
