GALLERY ROOM・A is pleased to present "What Carries," a solo exhibition by Ayumi Okita.
Creating paintings with lacquer (urushi) as her medium, Okita views lacquer—a natural tree sap that resists complete human control—as a "mediator" connecting people, nature, and the world. Facing the inherent characteristics of lacquer, whose colors and drying process vary depending on temperature, humidity, and season, and whose expression subtly shifts over time, Okita translates the dialogue between her own technique and the material’s response into her work as a form of co-creation.
The exhibition title, "What Carries," suggests entities like water, birds, and wind that circulate through the spaces of this world, carrying and bringing forth something anew. For Okita, the act of creation is a process of listening closely to the responses of these mediators at the intersection of the world and ourselves. Lacquer, responding to the artist’s touch with unexpected transformations, continues to evolve even after completion, gradually increasing its transparency over time to bring underlying colors and images to the surface. This fluid transition feels as though the artwork itself is a living organism, breathing alongside the world and deepening its expression with the passage of time. In our contemporary era, where human activities and the natural environment are inextricably intertwined, Okita’s works quietly direct our awareness toward non-human existences and the invisible breaths circulating throughout the world. We invite you to experience the world of Ayumi Okita, brought to life through the medium of lacquer.
