Mai Yamashita + Naoto Kobayashi is an art unit that is active both domestically and internationally through their video works and installations. In their work, they capture nature as an uncontrollable and uncertain presence, attempting to somehow establish relationships with it. Through their work, even the trivialities of everyday life encounter moments of value or transform into miraculous events. This has the power to subtly yet dynamically shake the perspectives and values of the viewers, sometimes even altering their view of the world. One could say it's a manifestation of their sincere interest in "others," including nature and animals, and ultimately their profound concern for this world.
This exhibition comprehensively introduces the diverse expressions and practices of Mai Yamashita + Naoto Kobayashi, including their earliest works and domestically unreleased pieces, unraveling their entirety. Additionally, as a new work, leveraging the characteristics of this center's space, they will unfold a giant participatory artwork in the outdoor plaza during the exhibition period. In the current context where the unstable relationship between humans and nature has been visualized through disasters and pandemics, and with ongoing global conflicts, this exhibition provides an opportunity to reconsider relationships with "others" and update perceptions of the world each individual sees, creating a chance to question the ways of individual existence.
