Mingei Exhibition

Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka
Finished
"Mingei," or folk crafts, is the popular art of the people as taught by the thinker Muneyoshi Yanagi about 100 years ago. The concept of "mingei," which means appreciating the beauty in daily life and caring about the materials and makers, is now needed once again and is becoming a familiar part of daily life. This exhibition explores the theme of mingei in terms of "clothing, food, and shelter," and displays approximately 130 beautiful mingei items that have been used in daily life. Another highlight of the exhibition is an installation by Terry Ellis and Keiko Kitamura (director of MOGI Folk Art), both longtime directors of the select store Beams until this summer and who have played a major role in the current folk art boom, that fuses contemporary lifestyle and folk art.

The exhibition will visit where folk art is produced and introduce the makers who work there and the handicrafts handed down from generation to generation. This is an exhibition that looks at the beauty in daily life as described by Yanagi, what Mingei is, its expansion, its present, and its future.
