Most city dwellers are surrounded by artificial things and spend their days disconnected from the earth. However, if we look around, in interstitial spaces like roadsides and vacant lots we can discover new ecosystems that have adapted to changes in the environment. Here we find non-native species, self-sustaining vegetation, and organisms that coexist with concrete and plastic. Human activity is now the predominant factor behind changes in the natural environment, destabilizing ecosystems, and the boundaries between the natural and the artificiality are becoming increasingly blurred. How can we reconnect with nature in the midst of a city that is endlessly developing and stirs up human desires? This exhibition will present artists who are creating unpretentious yet powerful works as they seek to reconnect with the ever-changing natural environment. Seeds are carried in all directions by the wind and extend their roots wherever they land to take up the nutrients they find there. Like seeds, artwork goes on living without resisting or returning to the past, gently embracing change. It extends its roots from there to revive the feeling of the soil within us and awaken our physical senses.
Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery has mounted exhibitions across a wide range of genres, including contemporary art, architecture, and fashion. While serving as a bridge to these previous efforts, this exhibition presents a group of works that newly reinterpret nature in an urban setting.
