This exhibition traces the interactions and creations of four artists, Shuzo Takiguchi (1903-79), Nobuya Abe (1913-71), Kiyoji Otsuji (1923-2001), and Shigeo Gocho (1946-1983). The exhibition will introduce a fragment of Japan's Showa-era photographic history from the 1930s to the 1980s.

In the 1930s, while the avant-garde photography of the 1930s was being actively exhibited, Takiguchi spoke of surrealism in photography as "surrealism is the discovery of beauty hidden in the deep folds of everyday reality. This exhibition is based on this idea.

Abe, who founded the "Avant-garde Photographic Society" with Takiguchi in 1938, sympathized with Takiguchi and turned his camera on the cityscape. Otsuji, who was also strongly influenced by Takiguchi and Abe, created a series of photographs titled "Nandemo Nai Shashin. Otsuji's favorite disciple, Gocho, captured the people and landscapes around him from his unique perspective, as he said, "Photographs on the edge of what might be overlooked.”

The ideas and works of the four artists influence each other and show the state of "avant-garde" photography that goes beyond the technical images that are often associated with avant-garde photography.

The exhibition will undergo a major change during the exhibition period.
