Itabashi Art Museum opened on May 20, 1979, as the first municipal art museum in Tokyo's 23 wards. In 2019, the museum celebrated its 40th anniversary and underwent a major renovation to make the building fit the needs of the times and the activities of the museum, reopening with a new look.
The museum's collection consists mainly of Edo Kano School and other early modern paintings, avant-garde art from the Taisho and early Showa periods, and work by artists associated with Itabashi City.
Through its collection and research activities, the museum has held exhibitions to introduce Edo culture and Ikebukuro Montparnasse to a wide audience. The museum also holds exhibitions related to illustration and design, such as the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, as well as lectures, workshops, and other activities related to these exhibitions.
