Museum

Atelier Momosada is a unique on-campus facility housed in a former national rice storehouse complex. The row of 8 red-roofed buildings was originally constructed in 1934 by the predecessor of the current Akita branch of ZEN-NOH (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations), then donated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 1939 and used to regulate the supply of rice. Each building is of wooden construction, originally single-floored, with a frontage of 14.3m, a depth of 45m and a maximum height of 8.5m. The capacity of the entire 8-building complex was enough to store an amount equivalent to roughly 30% of Akita Prefecture’s annual rice consumption.

Following their decommissioning in March 1990, various petitions for the continued use and preservation of the storehouses were made by residents of the local Araya District and other citizens of Akita City. Finally, in 1991, it was decided that the storehouses would be repurposed as workshop buildings for the newly-established Akita Municipal Junior College of Arts and Crafts (reorganized in 2013 as Akita University of Art). Seven of the eight buildings were transferred from Akita City and reopened in their new role in April 1995, while the remaining building is currently part of Araya Library, a municipal library located next to campus.

The buildings are greatly admired as examples of Showa-era wooden construction methods, and in 2000 the facility was officially registered as a national “Tangible Cultural Property” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Of the seven buildings, three are open to the public and operated by “Arts Center Akita”, an NPO established by Akita University of Art. These three buildings are referred to collectively as “Atelier Momosada”.

University or Educational Facility

The Akita City Cultural Creation Center is a new base for new ideas, for people pursuing artistic expression, and for the people of Akita. It is located in the center of Akita City, near Senshu Park and the ruins of Kubota Castle. The building, finished in 1967, originally housed the Akita Museum of Art. Its unique roof and the round windows were designed to allow sunlight to illuminate the large space, based on artist Tsuguharu Foujita's advice on how best to exhibit his large mural ‘The Events of Akita.’

Japan's first museum dedicated to original manga art.
Manga sometimes inspires courage, sometimes dreams, sometimes laughter, sometimes learning, and sometimes inspiration.

Yokote Masuda Manga Museum is a full-scale art museum dedicated to original manga art. The museum not only exhibits original works of manga, but also focuses on preserving them, and communicates to the world the fascination of manga culture, which is the pride of Japan.

The museum has the largest collection of original manga in Japan. Manga has become one of Japan's proudest cultural assets. We will focus on preserving and exhibiting valuable original works of manga to convey to the world the power and beauty of the real thing and the passion of the artists who created it, thereby conveying its appeal to the world.

The museum has a collection of more than 440,000 original paintings. By conveying the power and beauty of the real thing and the passion of the artists who created it, we will nurture a rich sensibility and rediscover the wonder of manga.

We hope that you will feel the passion of the many artists who have built the culture of manga through the breath of their original drawings.

This museum was established in June 2012 in order to relocate the current prefectural museum of art. In addition to exhibiting the works of Tsuguharu Foujita from the collection of the Masakichi Hirano Art Foundation, the new art museum aims to serve as a bridge between Akita’s people, downtown, and cultural creation through providing citizens with easy access to art and with gallery space to exhibit their artworks as well as by fostering a culture of art appreciation.

The Akita Senshu Museum of Art opened in 1989 within the Akita Integrated Life Cultural Hall-Museum (nicknamed Atorion). Its predecessor, the Akita City Museum established in 1958, has been cherished by many art lovers as an urban art museum.

The museum houses works by artists associated with Akita, such as Shozan Satake, Naotake Odano, the Hirafuku father-son duo Suian and Hyakusui, Kogyo Terasaki, and Ihei Kimura. It also hosts special exhibitions featuring excellent works from both domestic and international artists.

Additionally, the museum includes the Kenzo Okada Memorial Hall, which permanently exhibits works by the Western-style painter Kenzo Okada, who received high acclaim overseas, particularly in New York. The exhibits are periodically rotated to provide fresh viewing experiences for visitors.

Akita Museum of Modern Art opened in Akita Furusato Mura on April 20, 1994. The museum has a collection of works painted by artists associated with Akita from the late Edo period to the present, including "Akita Ranga" produced by feudal lords and feudal warriors in the mid to late Edo period. It holds special exhibitions, special exhibitions, and collection exhibitions to introduce various art forms. In addition, with the aim of becoming an art museum that is accessible to all, the museum actively engages in educational activities such as art museum lectures, and art museum classes where visitors can enjoy hands-on creative activities.
