Atsuhiko Misawa (1961-) is a leading Japanese sculptor known for his "Animals" series, in which he carves animals out of camphor wood and paints them with oil paint. Born and raised in Kyoto, Misawa was familiar with Buddhist statues, temples, and shrines from an early age. He studied sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts and its graduate school and attracted attention in the 1990s with his "Colloid Tomp" series, which was created by assembling driftwood and other materials. His interest in the human imagination led him to create the highly acclaimed “Animals" series in 2000, in which he pursued an innovative form of animal reality.
Misawa has received favorable reviews throughout Japan and "Animals/Multi-dimensions" is Misawa's first solo exhibition in Chiba. The theme of this exhibition is "multi-dimensions," and the entire Chiba City Museum of Art, designed by Yukio Otani, will serve as the exhibition venue. Visitors will encounter a variety of friendly and sometimes ferocious animals in various locations as if they had lived there. More than 200 sculptures and paintings, ranging from early unpublished works from the 1990s to the most recent, will approach the architecture of the museum.
Misawa, who has been a leader in the field of figurative wood sculpture and even contemporary art since the turn of the 21st century, has developed in recent years into an expressionist style that combines images of multiple animals, including imaginary creatures such as the kirin and the chimera. During the Triennial, the artist is scheduled to participate in a residency program.
