Shigeo Toya Exhibition
This event has ended.
Toya calls his recent series "minimal baroque", a concept that arises from the tension between two contradictory elements - minimal and baroque- when these polar points that are yet part of a continuum meet. The third exhibition from the series comprises work from his newest forest series, "Forest IX", and drawings for the work.
Toya saw elements of baroque in the intricate makeup of forests. Intrigued, he started the "forest" series in 1986. Up until the 8th exhibition in this series, he kept questioning the nature of sculpture through his artistic process. While exploring his own practice through this series, he became more and more conscious of the moral position that consisted in standing against the hedonism often seen in overdone artistic expression, ultimately arriving at the new concept of a "minimal baroque". Meanwhile, he rediscovered the theme of forests under this new scheme, and decided to introduce "Forest IX" in the context of minimal baroque for the first time.
