Mari Ota Exhibition
This event has ended.
Mari Ota was born in Nagoya in 1982 and graduated from the department of oil painting at Tama Art University in 2006, after which she completed a graduate course in painting at the Kyoto University of the Arts. She participated in the "Gaze and Curiosity" exhibition at Mizuma Action in 2006, as well as the fourth volume of the same exhibition in 2008. Ota's drawings, simplified from her own personal impressions, are composed of fragments of everyday life like a diary entry.
On display at this exhibition are works created by layering lines over painted images.
Previously, Ota worked by overlapping and layering images as if she were smearing or daubing over music scores that she had used herself. Last year she began drawing only images on large sheets of white paper, and began to feel a sense of discomfort about working in this manner - a practice of merely tracing out images. All of a sudden, Ota felt compelled to return to the process of daubing that she has initially employed. Viewing these carefully rendered works, she was seized by a strong, surging impulse that she had a strong desire to quell: a desire to return to the origins of her practice. Ota now paints according to these two conflicting sensations.
