This event has ended.

We are pleased to announce the first extensive solo show of Pu Jie, an internationally renowned artist based in Shanghai (b. 1959 Shanghai). Pu Jie weaves together stories of people living in the shadow of the new historical times while keeping his focus on the larger context of contemporary urban Shanghai. The ever-changing urban culture, politics, greed, order and chaos, present and past, what changes and what does not. His large paintings contain various underlying images that can be glimpsed through the top layer covered with vivid primary colors that evoke the intricate and mediated reality of everyday life in a rapidly changing contemporary Chinese society.

Pu Jie describes the color yellow, which features heavily in his works, as representative of "contemporary China itself". Yellow is now emblematic of China after its opening up to the world, with its connotations of money and the adult entertainment industry, but it also used to be symbolic of absolute power in the past.

This exhibition will present Pu Jie's pictorial world with a particular focus on a large work measuring 4.6m in height and measuring 550 square meters, inspired by the large spaces of post-war architecture. It will be designed so to show a continuity with the Pu Jie exhibition that is being held at the Beijing Today Art Museum from September 24th to October 8th 2009.

On September 11th we will be celebrating the opening with the artist in attendance. Please join us between 18:00-20:00 at Tamada Projects.
