110th Memorial Exhibition for Illustrator Hikozo Ito
Yayoi Museum
This event has ended.
Hikozo Ito produced period-specific illustrations for boys’ magazines such as “Shonen-Kurabu” (Boys Club). A descendent of the master fencer Itosai Ito, Hikozo was a serious student of swordsmanship in addition being a superb illustrator, and was known for eccentric episodes such as drawing with his own blood. This exhibition presents around 350 of his works, with a focus on his sharply rendered pen illustrations. Ito, who once said, “The spirit is not an artist but a warrior,” drew portraits of extreme situations that faced death head-on while evoking violent, bewitching beauty and bloodlust. His works have the power to make viewers’ hair stand on end.
