Stories are the basic theme of up-and-coming artist Yasuhiro Asai’s works. Contrasting scenes of the organic in the natural world and the inorganic of civilization, Asai overlaps translucent layers of acrylic and tempera paint. The works displayed here depict the natural world encroaching on the manmade and the decay of the artificial abandoned in nature. By joining various motifs together and polishing concrete ideas, Asai creates virtual spaces and stories. Inspired by soaring mountain summits, “Gather,” the largest painting at this exhibition, expands on the idea of replacing structures that seem to crawl along mountain ridges with a railway and train, highlighting the strange presences that exist within nature. Exploring themes of contrast, this work resembles a mythic world from a picture book or novel.
