Well known for his participatory works and recently appearing in numerous biennials and triennials both across Japan and internationally Yoshiaki Kaihatsu is a widely acclaimed artist. In 1999 he created a work under the title of “Impressions of the Rising Sun” in response to issues surrounding dispatch troops to the Gulf war and the government’s ambivalent interpretation of article 9 of the constitution. On this occasion he adds “Impressions of the Rising Moon” to this series. Taking up the motif of the Japanese national flag he formulates an installation mimicking the patterns of stars, planets and satellites.
