Ryts Monet “Sisters”
Gallery Coexist Tokyo
This event has ended.
The Italian artist Ryts Monet traces the beginnings of the Keicho Era Mission to Europe launched by Hasekura Tsunenaga in the 17th century, setting off from Ishinomaki in 1615 to cross the Pacific Ocean, pass through Mexico, cross the Atlantic and finally reach Rome’s Civitavecchia. Developing a reflection on this historical journey, Monet also comes to examine the relations between the two cultures. The title “Sisters” draws from the fact that Ishinoki and Civitavecchia were twinned as sister towns, and through a seemingly soft interface cast his own cynical eye of jest.
