This event has ended.

The work of Shiro Takatani breaks the mold of established modes of photography and video. Rather than take the approach of “camera obscura”, where light is brought into a dark closed space cut off from the rest of the world, Takatani pursues the concept of “camera lucida” in a process of openness, where an image appears superimposed upon a surface in the open light, allowing both real and virtual image to be viewed simultaneously. Takatani questions is the device of the camera must always take the form of a black box of the camera obscura through a series of works including “Frost Frame /Europe 1987”, “Mirror Type K2”, “Topograph” and “Toposcan”, reinstilling a sense of what it means to see through the human eye and through that of an optical device.
