Cats have been beloved since first coming to Japan during the Nara period. Depicted by painters, sculptors, and writers, it is not an exaggeration to say that cats have been a source of inspiration for Japanese artists and are a national treasure. Under the motif national treasure this exhibit depicts cats in various time periods and across genres.
