Ryota Kyoshima is a photographer born in Yamanashi prefecture in 1979. inspired by the magnificent landscape of Australia, where he stayed from 2001, he decided to pursue photography after returning to Japan. selected as an Emon Photo Award finalist in 2019, he is one of the young artists who are expected to be active in the future. He is currently working on the theme of “Symbiosis,” which focuses on the relationship between nature, people, plants, and animals.

In this exhibition, about 30 C-printed works depicting the “flow” brought about by the interaction of nature and people’s activities, set in a village around a quiet, pale green dam lake, will be on display.

Kyoshima first visited the village to interview an inkstone craftsman but eventually learned through the media that the dam had caused the area to flood more easily. From that moment on, the scenery in front of her eyes changed drastically, and every time she visited the village, Kyoshima was inundated with the sound of deforming mountains of earth and sand, the remains of muddy streams, and the heavy bass of heavy machinery clearing away the earth and sand.

This work does not have the artist’s intention to pursue the social problems occurring in this village. The landscape depicted by the stagnant earth and sand is formed by the intersection of the majestic nature and human activities. The work, in which the artist gazes at the scene in an indifferent manner, has a penetrating beauty spun from a Japanese sensibility of a certain sense of resignation and impermanence.
